SynergenOG delivered a four-day Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) training programme for Pertamina Hulu Indonesia in Balikpapan, Indonesia.
The programme was attended by 19 participants from functions including Process Safety and Asset Integrity, Asset Integrity and Reliability, Process Safety Assurance, Health, Safety, Security and Environment, Product Operations, and Surface Facilities Planning and Support.
The training provided an overview of the methods used to identify, assess, and evaluate risks associated with foreseeable Major Accident Hazards within a facility.
Participants were introduced to the main stages of a QRA, from hazard identification and consequence modelling to frequency analysis, event tree development, risk calculation, and interpretation of results.
The course also covered fire and explosion hazards, dropped objects, occupational hazards, and other non-hydrocarbon hazards that may affect personnel and facility operations.
A key part of the programme focused on how hazard assessment results are translated into personnel risk. Participants reviewed how QRA findings can be used to identify the main contributors to risk and assess where further risk-reduction measures may be required.
The As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) principle and Cost-Benefit Analysis were also covered, including their use in evaluating risk-reduction measures during facility design and operation.

The training included presentations, individual exercises, and group activities. These sessions allowed participants to work through the different stages of a QRA and consider how the results may be applied in process safety, asset integrity, operations, and facility planning.
