Octane

Octane refers to a chemical compound with the formula C₈H₁₈, commonly used as a measure of the performance of an engine or aviation gasoline. Higher octane numbers indicate greater resistance to knocking, which is the premature ignition of the fuel-air mixture in internal combustion engines.
