OGUK to delay prominent event due to COVID-19 threats

Chief Executive of UK North Sea Trade Association Oil & Gas UK (OGUK), Deidre Michie,  makes the call to minimise costs and uncertainty for the many delegates. The key event “Share Fair” is set to run on the 24th March in Aberdeen, Scotland. However, it has now been rescheduled to 16th September in an email received by the delegates.

OGUK events on the other hand, are expected to run as scheduled due to the short duration of the events and the localised audiences. This means shorter travel and limited contact between those in attendance. The situation will be continuously

Other events taking place which entail networking, significant travel or international delegates will also be affected.

Gareth Wynn, OGUK’s stakeholder and communications director, told news outlets that OGUK is working closely and consistently with their members to make sure they are up to date by circulating official advice on COVID-19 from relevant agencies and will continue to help ensure the health of people in the oil and gas industry. In addition to that, additional guidance will be communicated to all delegates prior to these events to help mitigate potential spread of the coronavirus.

There will also be events that will carry on as scheduled in both Aberdeen and London. These events are shorter in duration and bring in mostly locals. This means smaller travelling distances and limited contact between those who will be in attendance. The situation, however, will me monitored closely as per Gareth Wynn.

Meanwhile, the UK unveiled a “battle plan” to tackle the spread of COVID-19 in their country, advising as many as 20 percent of the workforce will be asked to self-quarantine at the peak of the outbreak (Reuters).

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the country would highly likely see the number of cases increase. The country so far has 51 confirmed cases of the virus, also known as COVID-19. Additionally, he called the situation a national challenge, and remained positive in a news conference with

Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer and Patrick Vallance, the government’s chief scientific adviser. Other strategies to control the spread of the virus include “social distancing”, delaying healthcare (non-urgent) and drafting in retired health workers (Reuters).
